BOARD WORKS

groupBoard Works promotes access to community leadership opportunities and connects area nonprofits with well trained, motivated and inspired board members.

To that end, Seattle Works offers a course called The Bridge for young professionals covering board governance, fundraising, financials and an overview of area nonprofits.

Once completed, Board Works helps participants find opportunities to serve - which is where you come in.

About our participants

The Bridge participants tend to be aged 25 to 35, work in professional environments, and want to become more involved in their community. Most have some previous volunteer experience. They have completed nine hours of skill training and personal reflection on their motivations to serve.

How it works

- We will meet with a representative from your organization to discuss the program, your board structure and your board needs.

- Participants in our training program - The Bridge - receive a list of Board Works organizations, including organizational overview and contact information.

- During The Bridge training, organizations will be given the opportunity to meet current participants during our 'Board Speed Dating' session.

- After The Bridge, Seattle Works will assess participants' skills and interests to see if there are any potential matches with organizations. Seattle Works will facilitate initial introductions of potential candidates and organizations.

- After initial introductions are made, it is up to individuals and organizations to connect independently where there is interest. Each organization can follow their own board recruiting process, whether that be a nominating committee, contact with the executive director, etc.

- Our role it to provide information, support, and resources. We cannot guarantee placement for either individuals or organizations.

Organizational Commitment

- Meet with a Seattle Works staff member to provide the information necessary for graduates to understand whether they would be interested in your organization and a good match.

- Complete the Board Works Contract, which outlines expectations of Board Works organizations.

- Commit to following up with interested individuals in a timely manner.

- Attend at least one Board Speed Dating event each year.

- Pay an annual program fee: $25 for organizations with budgets $250k and under, $50 for organizations with budgets $250k.
